(L)ast spring, Mr. Kauanui was beaten to death, and five young men from La Jolla, all in their 20s, were charged in his murder. In court last week, prosecutors said that because the men were members of the Bird Rock Bandits, they should be prosecuted under tough state laws that apply to criminal street gangs. http://www.nytimes.com/2008/05/12/us/12surfer.html
So, when does a "fraternity" become a "gang"? Seems pretty simple - the minute you decide to band together for the purpose of pummeling someone to death. Gangs protect territory, fraternities protect the society within. A frat may be territorial in the sense of sprucing up the neighborhood, helping the elderly, and working to make it a better place to be. Throwing a testosterone fit over a flirtation does improve anyone's neighborhood. And it's high time men like this came to the realization that their higher purpose was to spread good will, not their seed. Maybe then, not only would neighborhoods improve, but the treatment of women, too.
